New Developments
Description
The development of a new topology for class D Power Amplifiers from Radical Electronics Development labs sets a new level of performance for class D amplification. Some of the advantages of the new PSM topology (patent pending) are:
- Isolation can be provided between the power supply, control circuit and the output.
- The output can be half bridge type of design without the associated problems of supply pumping
- Operates off a single supply. No need for positive and negative supplies.
- High efficiency single conversion stage.
- The input supply voltage does not limit output voltage swing.
- Multiple output channels can be easily added.
- Isolated DC supply rails are easily generated.
- Bi-directional power conversion.
- Half the power train components count of a class D amplifier, less than 1/3 the component count of a class D amplifier plus power supply.
- Low cost and small size.
- Switching voltage is only limited by the voltage rating of the power FETs used.
- High supply noise rejection.
Applications
The PSM topology can be applied in anywhere a standard class D amplifier is used. This can be for audio amplifiers, DC-AC converters (power inverters), or DC to DC converters.
The initial product using this technology is the PM400 series of amplifiers. The cost is only $80.00 USD for 400W of output power (in 1K qty). That is only 20 cents per watt!!! This is less than the cost of the transformer to power an analog amplifier and you get the added benefits of high efficiency and small size.
Other applications for this technology could be:
- Portable/Home entertainment center amplifier and power supply
- Powered speaker systems
- Automotive sound systems
- Solar power or alternative energy converters
- Power inverters
- Electric vehicles
- And many more
